Weekend Wandering || Gareth Day || Climbing Portland

Filming the Weekend Wandering films certainly gets me to some pretty incredible places.

We headed off late one evening, watching the sun gradually set as we drove across Dorset to get here in time for some daylight climbing.

Thankfully, there was still some sun when we arrived so we got setup and Gaz got straight on the wall to set the route.

As I'm getting used to filming climbing, I'm trying to work out the best type of shots to show the scale of some of the accents and create some tension in the way he moves carefully across the cliffs. I managed to find a ledge that I ran around to where I could film across the cliff to Gaz. This allowed me to zoom all the way in on my lens and compress the background.

After I had got some shots of Gaz, I got my drone in the air as quick as possible as I was swiftly running out of daylight! As the drone was in the air, I had to keep bumping the iso to get some use-able footage. However, it still got a little pixelated for the film so I'll be sure to film more drone shots here.

I then went back to the camera where I bumped the iso there as we headed into night time. I have some footage from that too but...I'll leave that for another video.

After doing some filming and everyone had a go on the wall, Gaz asked if I'd like a go...my first sports climb...in the dark...I mean, it would've been rude not to!

With a trusty head torch, I headed off up the cliff a little on edge. As I climbed, I kept thinking to myself, "I want to be on the side of the cliff with my camera so I better not chicken out as I'll be in much more precarious positions in the future!"

Keeping my breathing steady and focusing on locking in my hands and feet between movements, I was grateful for my arm span and being so tall to be able to reach all the holds, even if a couple took me a minute to find.

At the top. standing out and looking across the ocean at the moon reflecting in the sea was a moment that I'll remember. It was so peaceful up there.

Now, to get more used to being attached to a rope so I can start to get the real exciting shots from the side of the cliff!
